THE OVERBERG AND CAPE AGULHAS

Different to all other tours offered, cause we enjoy the ocean, apple farming, whale watching and cultural heritage.

Agriculture and animal husbandry have remained the mainstays of the economy of the Overberg for more than two and a half centuries. The region’s most important crops are fruit and grains.

The beautiful coast is also notoriously dangerous – especially around Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point of Africa and the graveyard of many unwary vessel.

DAY 1
Collect from airport and transfer to Commodore Hotel – Waterfront BB
PM At leisure.

DAY 2
Depart and travel along N2 and then the N15 to Grabouw and Elgin just over the Langeberg range. These two towns are the hub of an intensively cultivated region that accounts for a substantial proportion of South Africa’s apple crop. The Elgin area boasts several apple- picking and –packing co-operatives with extensive cooling facilities.
From here we go back to the N2 and to Houwhoek. The road passes through a flurry of orchards, as far as the valley of the Krom River, before ascending the ravine of the Jakkals River to Houwhoek. It is the oldest wayside hostelry still in use.
We pass through Caledon with its 6 springs of hot water and one of cold gushing from a hill at the foot of the Swartberg range.
We overnight in Hermanus – The Riviera of the South – at Schulphoek Seafront Guest House DBB, a very cosmopolitan resort. Visit the village square, listen to the whale crier to find out where whales can be spotted. (August to November).

DAY 3
After breakfast we travel along the coast through Gansbaai (famous for shark cage diving). Stop at Walkers Bay (only fresh water caves on the African coast), Danger Point Lighthouse - where the AMT Birkenhead met her doom in 1852 with the loss of 443 lives.
Our next stop will be at L’Agulhas – which is the most southern tip of Africa. It is here that the 2 oceans meet and we will have lunch in the lighthouse and drive to Struisbaai.
Overnight at Agulhas Country Lodge DBB.

DAY 4
The second last day of our journey takes us through Bredasdorp (sheep and wheat centre of the southern Cape), and also the breeding ground of thoroughbred horses and sheepdogs. Visit the shipwreck museum and the Dutch Reformed Church (Cape Gothic architecture).

We now go back in time when we arrive at Elim – one of the best-known mission stations in the country. The name for this mission station was chosen because of the fountains in the area, after Exodus 15 v 27. Everything here is done by the congregation – they all have to be members of the congregation. There are special rules regulating the types of buildings and this charming village is a national monument. The water mill, with its mighty wooden wheel, is the oldest of its kind in our country, dating back to 1838. All the roads in Elim lead to the church.

Our next stop will be Genadendal with its white walled black thatch cottages and then onto the tree shaded village of Greyton. The village was named after Sir George Grey, governor of the Cape.
Back to the N2 and Cape Town.
